    Joanne Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights

    Bij compleet toeval liep ik vorige week door de televisiegids en merkte een heel onwaarschijnlijk programma op. Joanne Lumley, vooral bekend als Patsy uit Absolutely Fabulous gaat haar jeugddroom achterna en reist naar het noorden van Noorwegen om daar het noorderlicht te zien. We reizen met haar mee vanaf het station in Trondheim (yay!) naar Å op de eilandengroep Lofoten, tot aan een ijshotel helemaal in het leefgebied van de Sami.

    De reactie van Lumley is prachtig, ik kan me de ijskoude oktobernacht in 2006 nog goed herinneren dat ik er precies hetzelfde bij stond, ontiegelijk nietig en zelfs inclusief de gedachte “hoe gelukkig kun je eigenlijk zijn”. De omschrijving van Lumley is oprecht, maar ik denk dat je het noorderlicht gezien moet hebben om dat gevoel helemaal te begrijpen.

    Vakantie in Kopenhagen

    We zijn alweer een ruime week terug van Kopenhagen, maar ik moest eerst nog even een tentamen voorbereiden, dus de foto’s kwamen wat later, maar wél in een wat origineler jasje dan een standaard gallery pagina.

    Het is een mooie week geweest, zij het een beetje vermoeiend, maar daarvoor is het natuurlijk vakantie… Een verslagje met wel heel veel gaten:

    De eerste dag begon een beetje vroeg om 5 uur, omdat we de goedkope red-eye vlucht hadden gekozen. Daardoor waren we echter wel al om half 10 bij het hotel en konden we dus meteen de eerste dag de stad al gaan verkennen.

    Het weer liet ons de eerste dag nog wel onze jassen meenemen, maar die hebben we uiteindelijk helemaal niet aan gehad. Rond een uur of 5 trok de bewolking weg, die we pas op de laatste dag weer terug zouden zien.

    Goed, de eerste dag, een beetje rondwandelen in een nieuwe stad, zonder echt een doel voor ogen en vooral goed rond je heen kijken. Het ziet er allemaal een beetje Noord-Duits en een beetje Scandinavisch uit.

    De dagen erna wordt het alleen maar warmer en komt het dagprogramma vooral neer op een paar uurtjes rondwandelen, wat bekijken en dan lekker niksen tussen de Denen in het park met de snackjes en drinkjes die we in de supermarkt hebben gehaald (tip: zoek uit hoe de supermarkten heten waar je heen gaat en probeer van te voren al uit te vinden waar ze zijn, in Denemarken zijn het Netto en Irma die we veel tegen kwamen).

    Maandags gaan we per trein naar Malmö in Zweden; minder Duits, meer Scandinavisch.

    Woensdag is onze laatste dag, we hebben niks meer gepland staan en gaan een kijkje nemen in Ørestad, een van de nieuwste wijken van Kopenhagen met veelbelovende architectuur etc. Nu moeten we ergens een verkeerde afslag genomen hebben, want zo geweldig was het nou allemaal ook niet. We pakken de metro terug de stad in, halen voor de zoveelste keer een ongelooflijk lekker ijsje (vlierbessen, hmmmm) en wachten tot we naar huis mogen :)

    Back from Dresden

    I’m back from my little Germany Interrail trip to Dresden, stopped over at Düsseldorf to visit family for a few days.

    Dresden turns out to be a great city with lots of stuff to see and to do! Certainly worth another visit, I think. Thank you, Admar for some nice days.

    To Dresden

    Got my Interrail ticket today, on Thursday I’m leaving for Dresden to visit Admar – who really should post something new to his journal, by the way!

    So I’m leaving on Thursday morning, 7:02 with the Intercity 1917 to Venlo, wait 20 minutes, then with the RegionalExpress 9011 to Düsseldorf Hbf, wait some 40 minutes and then with the InterCityExpress 1759 straight to Dresden-Neustadt, where I will arrive 10 hours later, save one minute, at 17:01.

    I’m looking forward to it!

    Drawn! I'm going on the study tour

    I got a message that finally the draw for the places in the Kalmar study tour took place and that I was in fact drawn to join them.

    There is a maximum of 24 participants, 27 subscribed, 13 of which are computer science students and the first 12 of them are placed with the 13th put on hold. I was number 6.

    For the remaining 14 mathematics students, case studies will have to be found, but I’m sure they’ll manage.

    In the end it will mean that we probably are going with 27 after all.

    And now? Now we wait for our case study to come available and the excursions and lectures to prepare for the tour.

    First information meeting of Kalmar

    Well, this is filed under holiday, but of course it will be hard work. I applied today for Kalmar, the Scandinavia Study Tour in 2008 of GEWIS. This study tour will visit the cities of Trondheim (world famous for their bike elevator… well at least among Rocketboom viewers, Stockholm and Helsinki.

    The topic of the tour will be “networking”, as Scandinavia is famous for its advanced telecommunication networks and companies. We will visit some companies and universities, learn about Nordic culture (me likes :-)) and there will also be enough off-time for ourselves.

    It however isn’t all partying. In advance, a case study has to be done and some excursions in the Netherlands (Reykjavík University would call them “Science Trips” ;). Afterwards, a final report is written about the study tour.

    There will be a maximum of 24 participants and judging by the turnout at the information meeting this afternoon, a lottery draw might be needed.

    Subscription is open until 6 April, but you’re encouraged to enter before the February 13th, in order to take precedence. On the other hand, by not subscribing, I will have a bigger chance to get in.

    Back to Berlin

    Als das Kind Kind war, ging es mit hängenden Armen,

    With these words starts Der Himmel über Berlin, a movie by Wim Wenders (who is from Düsseldorf). It is set in 1987 Berlin, the divided Berlin. At that time cracks were already starting to show, the Cold War was thawing.

    Since it’s a West-German movie from before the Wende and I have only been in the former eastern part of the city (except for the Kreuzberg quarter and the Anhalter Bahnhof which Peter Falk thought was a funny name), it showed an image of the the city which was new to me.

    While we were watching it during our weekly movie night, it made me decide I want to go back to the city again – I’ve been there a week in 1997 with a school exchange and returned in 2001 for holidays. This time to maybe see a bit more of the old western part.

    It’s always been in the back of my mind to return to the German capital city and this year it might just fit in the small eurotrip through Austria, Germany and Denmark I’m thinking of making…

    Back from Edinburgh (and more)

    Yes, well, actually it’s been almost a month now since we came back from Edinburgh, but I didn’t want to post without pictures being online and I had to edit them plus I didn’t have a decent piece of photo gallery software.

    But now I do! It is called p.hot.os and it is going to be my photo gallery page, so here it is, the post on Edinburgh.

    Actually, p.hot.os is nothing more than webgen with a custom gallery layouter (and you can even do without that one). So, basically, I now use webgen for my gallery needs! Please tell me what you think of it, I still have some ideas to implement (for instance something with Google Maps, like most of you probably already saw in my Coppermine gallery).

    So, back to Edinburgh… Uhm, I’m back from Edinburgh and it was a great weekend. We saw a lot of the city and got a hint of its surroundings, took a lot of pictures, but didn’t get on the 41 however. I’d like to thank you, Paul, for your hospitality and hope to see you soon (in a few minutes, since you’re coming home at the moment I’m writing this).

    Leukerbad posts moved from journal to archive

    I moved the posts of the holidays in Leukerbad to the archive. This way, it won’t show up anymore in the sections sidebar, but in the static section of the site.

    Because of the ordering of the journal, the holiday diaries should be read in reverse order. I’ll look into it to check whether it is possible to define your own ordering, thus enabling an ascending chronological order (instead of descending like in the journal).
